Statement Regarding Forced Registration in Accordance with the Law of Georgia “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”

September 3, 2024 [email protected] Comments Off

The Georgian Development Platform (GeoDP) Recognizes the fundamental importance of democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and civil society for the development of a modern state.

Considers the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution of Georgia, including freedom of expression, freedom of association, and the right to participate in public affairs.

Acknowledges the significant role of civil society organizations in strengthening democracy, protecting human rights, and promoting good governance, and affirms its commitment to Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration goals.

Emphasizes the importance of transparency, accountability, and integrity principles in the activities of public organizations.

And declares the following:

  • The Georgian Development Platform does not welcome the enactment of the Georgian law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”;
  • This law demonizes the non-governmental sector in the eyes of citizens, while the rhetoric disguised as a universally recognized standard of information transparency creates misconceptions about the activities of Georgian non-governmental and foreign donor organizations;
  • All this contains significant risks that will harm the country’s democratic development, as well as Georgia’s process of joining the European Union;
  • We express our principled rejection of the law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” and, considering the existing difficulties, we are forced to register with the Ministry of Justice.

The organization continues to work to ensure public readiness for Georgia’s democratic development and European integration process.

For this purpose:

  • It will actively engage in the process of implementing universally recognized democratic principles and monitoring international agreements undertaken by Georgia;
  • Will implement projects that will promote the establishment of principles of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law;
  • Will conduct research and provide recommendations to state agencies to implement international standards;
  • Will promote raising citizens’ awareness about European values and standards.

The organization will firmly defend its values and principles and will be ready to resist any attempt aimed at undermining the contribution and role of civil society in Georgia’s development process, distancing it from the Georgian population by spreading disinformation, causing reputational damage to both the organization and individuals employed in non-governmental society organizations.

The Georgian Development Platform was, is, and will remain an organization advocating for the interests of the Georgian population!

The Georgian Development Platform N(N)LE was founded in 2019. The main part of the organization’s projects is related to supporting public sector activities at the central and municipal levels and ensuring citizen involvement in decision-making processes. Grants funded by foreign donors on the path of European integration allow it to support the development of Georgian state structures, increase their efficiency and accountability, and transparency, as well as active citizen involvement in decision-making processes.
